Latin Mass attracting the young

In the diocese of Rockville Centre, which has grown to nearly 2 million Catholics, there are two main types in the Latin Masses: the older people who fondly remember it, and the young mostly homeschooling famlies full of young children who are learning to appreciate tradition. The Washington Times has an article describing this.

No surprise there!

Programs, like Life Teen, designed to be foisted on the young seem primarily designed for the gratification of baby boomers. The music, for example, is of a type that seems to appeal primarily to that generation. If some purely anecdotal evidence is in order here, I offer the following. The last Life Teen Mass I had unexpectedly sprung on me featured a band whose leading lights were about the same age as Mick Jagger. Another time, about a dozen rows of pews at the front of the church were roped off as reserved for the teenagers; three kids had that whole section all to themselves. And the Life Teen band at a former parish of mine had about one person that could have been under 30.

A lot of people argue that this stuff has brought many kids to Christ. But it seems to me based on a highly objectionable premise: namely, that the Mass has to be "made relevant" to kids. I think this premise is based on a lack of understanding of what the Mass really is, as well as a certain presumptuousness and pride (if only Jesus had known better, He'd have spiced up the Last Supper and the Sacrifice of Calvary in order to entertain the kids).

Last week I went to my first Latin Mass for 40 years. What a truly devout, holy experience it was; and both the priest and congregation were young (under 40). I saw only one older person there besides myself. But alas it was many miles from my home town so I can't go regularly though I'd love to. I'm praying to the Holy Spirit that the use of the Latin Mass will grow and spread throughout the chuch. We need it.
