Chuck Colson, eternal rejoicing for a cheerful culture of life warrior

From silly devotions and from sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us.
St Teresa of Avila

There is nothing worse than a depressing culture warrior.
Sure the battle is a losing one (on this side of Heaven) and the enemy, in the space of two generations,  has won over the great majority of formerly Christian institutions (media, education, entertainment) but we have no reason to be gloomy, Christ has overcome the world. Our side wins the battle and rejoices eternally with the angels and saints in the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Which is part of the reason why I loved listening to Chuck Colson's  "Breakpoint" commentaries. He was upbeat, he acted as though it was actually Good News he was sharing. He was never judgemental and gave me, a Catholic, no reason to believe he thought my Faith consigned me to hell.I even had hopes he would swim the Tiber one day.
His cheerful stories and exhortations in his inspirational show put the wind back in my sails and reminded me to fight the good fight with charity in my heart, and  a smile on my face. Chuck Colson was far from a TV evangelist, however, he was not out for popularity, never shying away from speaking the truth in love, as when he joined the Manhattan Declaration.
Prison Fellowship was an outgrowth of lessons Chuck learned in prison for his involvement in the Watergate scandal, and he kept the lesson of humble dependence on God ever before him, never forgetting where his strength came from.
God grant Eternal Joy to Chuck, and welcome him home with the words, "well (and cheerfully) done, good and faithful servant". We will miss you, Chuch Colson, as CS Lewis said, Christians never say goodbye. See you on the other side.
Rick and Karen Santorum were personal friends of Chuck Colson and made the following statement:

"Karen and I were deeply saddened to learn about Chuck's passing. Over the last few years, both in and out of public life, I've had the opportunity to get to know Chuck and have admired him and his commitment to living out his faith.

"Chuck was a humble man who learned from his own frailty to care for the 'least of these,' especially prisoners. His work to bring Christianity to those who were in their darkest days changed the lives of many.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Chuck's wife Patty, the entire Colson family and the community at Prison Fellowship Ministries during this very difficult time. Chuck was a patriot, who loved his country and loved serving his God, and we are all a little better off for having known him."

Bigger than the Royal Wedding

I don't mean to rain on the Royal Wedding celebration, I wish the couple every happiness in their wedded life, and hope the Brits have a wonderful celebration. I look back on my days living in Highbury, London with great affection. It was just this time of year when I reluctantly left Britain for the Continent. I've been back twice since, once taking a course at the University of London, and spending a delightful weekend at Oxford, city of dreaming spires. But I just can't help comparing as we Catholics have an even bigger event this weekend, and I am waiting with just as eager anticipation as I see on the news about the wedding.

Servant of God, Pope John Paul II will be beatified in Rome on Sunday. A human being has overcome tragedy and oppression, and reached extraordinary heights of holiness, touching the lives of millions, transforming the Culture of Death by planting seeds of the New Springtime of Evangelization. He has become the role model for millions of zealous young religious, and generously sized families often have a son bearing his name. Universities and schools are already named after him. His Theology of the Body is enthusiastically studied by scholars and the faithful alike.  John Paul rewrote the map of Europe, overcoming forty years of Communist dictatorship with prayer and encouragement of his people. His intercessory prayers healed a nun of Parkinson's Disease from which he heroically suffered.
Now he is to be raised to the altar with the feast day October 22. That's something to celebrate! The population of Rome has already doubled, swelling with pilgrims who are there for the occasion. I was just invited to join them but, alas, finances will not permit me. I will be there in spirit, however, celebrating with my family in a Beatification Party; Polish food while watching the big event on the TV. My portrait of John Paul will be festooned with bunting and spring flowers, and we will conclude our Divine Mercy Novena as we toast our new Blessed John Paul II.

Before I was a blogger, I used to write articles and poetry when I was inspired by something great. In 1979 I saw the young Pope John Paul in Madison Square Garden and wrote this poem, which won second place in the New York State Catholic Daughters' Poetry Contest. It helped me think that I might have a career in journalism.

The Pilgrim Pope
From Ireland's Emerald Hills,
To American's Freedom Shore,
Another humble pilgrim,
Comes 'cross the sea once more.

But this traveler is diff'rent,
Though, in looks, like all the rest,
His path is set by Christ,
Which makes his coming blest.

He comes in peace to spread,
The gentle Gospel Word,
So, open wide your hearts,
And let his voice be heard.

And then, in 1995 as a young mother I wrote this piece after attending the Mass at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City with my two year old daughter. It aws published in Queen of All Hearts, a Monfort publication. Today is the feast day of St Louis de Monfort, whose Marian Consecration both Pope John Paul and I have made.

When John Paul died, I was so moved I wrote this piece which was published in the National Catholic Reporter and Faith and Family magazine simultaneously.
Soon, I began to get the idea that I was being called to write as my small part of the New Evangelization, and in 2006, this blog became the vehicle to launch a writing career. Next month, I will be publishing my first book, "A Special Mother is Born".  We've both come a long way, Karol Wojtyla and I .
Blessed Pope John Paul, thank you for the hope you gave me, and for inspiring me to become a part of the New Springtime of Evangelization.

Pope Benedict ask us to use the media to evangelize

While preparing for World Media Day, May 24, the Holy Father had this to say,

"Employ these new technologies to make the Gospel known, so that the Good News of God’s infinite love for all people, will resound in new ways across our increasingly technological world!"

Meanwhile, at the Vatican, the head of L'Osservatore Romano says Obama is not pro-abortion.
“What I want to stress is that yesterday, on this precise and very delicate issue, the President said that the approval of the new law on abortion is not a priority of his administration. The fact that he said that is very reassuring to me. It also underlines my own clear belief: Obama is not a pro-abortion president,”
An editor in chief of the Vatican Newspaper can't be so ignorant of Obama's record in the first 100 days, or is he just an ideologue?
Either way, let's hope he's looking for work shortly.

Catholics Come Home a success

Catholics Come Home is a wonderful evangelization campaign hosted by the Diocese of Phoenix which has been credited with a 22% increase in Mass attendance. The commercials are visually stunning, and the message is orthodox and moving. Click here to view my favorite.
We need these on every Catholic media outlet. I have already seen them on EWTN. Popes Benedict and John Paul asked us to employ the media in just this way.

Bishop Hermann Speaks out boldly on abortion!

In our Supreme Court and in our Congress, we have a plethora of so-called Catholics who are failing to live their Catholic identity. Over 50 percent of our electorate voted for a president who is one of the most pro-culture-of-death candidates from a major party to run for the highest office of the land. Yes, we can thank one-half of our Catholics for bailing out on their faith! After almost 50 years of having 50 percent of Catholics abandoning their Catholic identity, we cannot expect to turn this culture around by short-term political efforts. In order to bring about a transformation from a culture of death to a culture of life, we have to restore our Catholic identity.
Can you hear me giving Bishop Hermann a standing ovation?! HE GETS IT! That's why Catholic bloggers blog, why all the new efforts at engaging media are directed at; reach the Catholic in or out of the pew with the truth. Sadly the tradtional route of doing this is often blocked by the very people who are charged with evangelization; liberal DRE's, Liturgists, 'leaders of song', and half-hearted priests who need a retreat with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. I knew a liberal priest who inspired me to write angry letters after each homily he gave, where he eviscerated Church teaching (thankfully I tore them up before sending them). Father spend 48 hours with the CFR's in Harlem and came back on FIRE for the Faith. He moved the tabernacle to the center of his church, introduced Eucharistic adoration, and Benediction, added hours of confession. .. and his homilies! Whew, such Catholicism!!
Now, he's entered the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. This conversion began with only 48 hours in their Friary in Manhattan where Father saw dozens of young men from around the world in love with Our Lord and His Church. Someone had to be praying for him. Someone had to invite him. BE THAT SOMEONE for you pastor!

"A radiation of joy"

I have something to share from watching the interview of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in September 2003, just re-broadcast on "The World Over" on EWTN.
'When Ray Arroyo asked then Cardinal Ratzinger about the nature of "The New Springtime of Evangelization", he smiled more broadly than any other time in the interview, saying that it would come from a small number of deeply committed people, and spread by a "radiation of joy" to the entire world. He then repeated that, especially in the youth, a radiation of joy would spread the Gospel as it did in the times of the legalization of Christianity by Constantine, affecting all the world.
I was so excited to see that the theme of both my blogs, the sharing of the joy I feel in being a Catholic, radiating to you, the reader, and to those you know, as an agent of the New Springtime of Evangelization, is also the vision of the Holy Father.
I can't wait to witness this joy in his meeting with youth next week!

Pope says it's time to evangelize Cuba

With dictator Fidel Castro finally stepping down, Cuba may be opening up to a new evangelization.
Pope Benedict reflects hope for this in his comments reflecting on the tenth anniversay of Pope John Paul II's 1998 visit to the nation which is 59% Catholic but has a severe priest shortage.

Our Lady of Charity, Queen of Cuba, pray for us!

The Future Depends on Love Tour

From August 3-11, 2007, seven to twelve CFR Friars of The Community of the Franciscans Friars of the Renewal will walk from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C . The friars will walk between six and thirteen miles per day. Our routes would include highly visible areas through cities, suburbs, poor neighborhoods, and rural settings, with stops at some religious and historic sites along the way. On days when the brothers are walking fewer miles, they will stop to pray at abortion clinics, to evangelize, to serve the poor in some capacity, and to help raise awareness or funds for various family-marriage-life organizations with the local associations on the route. Our hope is to arrange a different speaker to speak about a particular family-marriage-life issue each night.

In addition, we plan to work with several youth groups, Pro-Life groups, college students, and young adults. As the pilgrimage proceeds from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., these groups and individuals, we will evangelize people and engage their peers in the surrounding cities and towns by holding events about family-marriage-life matters, with particular focus upon purity, chastity, Theology of the Body, and community service. Th
ese groups and individuals will also inform people about the various speakers and locations of the walking preaching Tour.
Our purpose is to evangelize Americans about the Catholic mission to build a "Civilization of Love" through "The Culture of Life," at the heart of which are the following issues: the sanctity of the family, marriage, human life, corporal and spiritual works of mercy. We believe that spreading the Catholic principles of purity, chastity and Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body, through corporal and spiritual works of mercy are a critical part of restoring the dignity of the human person in the consciousness of our culture. This task is vital to our ultimate goal which is to lead others to participate in the Church's mission to save as many lives and souls as possible.

Prayer for Renewal of Consecration of The United States to the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in Heaven, who chose Mary as the fairest of your daughters; Holy Spirit, who chose Mary as Your spouse; God the Son, who chose Mary as Your Mother; in union with Mary, we adore your majesty and acknowledge Your supreme, eternal dominion and authority.

Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to you. Through her we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for the freedom, which has been its heritage. Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our president and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful economy born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of our Mother, have mercy on the sick, the poor, the tempted, sinners—on all who are in need.

Mary, Immaculate Virgin, Our Mother, Patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give our country and ourselves to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. O’ Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by the sword of sorrow prophesized by Simeon save us from degeneration, disaster and war. Protect us from all harm. O’ Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, you who bore the sufferings of your Son in the depths of your heart be our Advocate. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the Will of your Divine Son, we may live and die pleasing to God.

Amen

Review of Guerrilla Apologetics for Catholics

I have always meant to compile a cheat sheet for apologetics, ready answers, complete with Scripture references in case I'm asked one of the 'big questions' like: "Why do Catholics believe in Purgatory?" Well, thanks to Guerrilla Apologetics for Catholics, I no longer have to write my cheat sheet. It's all here, by topic, and full of Scriptural references. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is not referenced because, non-Catholics don't accept that as valid, and discussion must stem from a source both believers trust, the Scriptures.

As with Guerrilla Apologetics for Life Issues, this book teaches how to frame the discussion, not merely respond to innumerable questions until your opponent is worn out. In fact, he teaches how to turn their question into our question.

A great jumping-off point for a beginning apologist, or handy pocket guide for a seasoned apologist. It covers all the basic points of discussion, Purgatory, the doctrine of "faith alone is necessary for salvation, the doctrine of "Scripture alone", the Papacy (with a handy list of every pope since St. Peter), divorce, the saints, the Blessed Mother, and the Eucharist.
Once you get these basic points down, or become proficient at looking them up in this user-friendly book, you can correct 90% of Protestant misconceptions about Catholicism.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said, "most people don't reject Catholicism, they reject what they misinterpret as Catholicism". Correct the misconceptions, and your job is done.

The Laity's role in the New Springtime of Evangelization

These are excerpts from The Tide is Turning Toward Catholicism by David Hartline, a book I am reading for inspritation as I slog through my various projects this summer. One of my projects is completing an FCC application for a Non-Commercial Educational Catholic radio station. This is discouraging, because the local laity are rather lackluster when it comes to this amazing opportunity to evangelize Long Island with the outstanding teaching on EWTN. I am encouraged, however, to read the following about Catholic bloggers; did you know how influential you are? Dr Joseph Varacalli, of Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies knows, and has organized a panel of Catholic bloggers including yours truly, A Long Island Catholic and Dawn Eden to discuss how Catholic bloggers do an end run around the gatekeepers of Catholic information and evangelization at the upcoming conference for the Society of Catholic Social Scientists October 26-27th at St. John's University Law School. If you have a story about how, as a Catholic blogger, you have made an impact, contact me, and I'll include it in my talk, referring to your blog.

"A shining example of Catholic lay involvement is the Internet and specifically the Catholic blogosphere. While Catholicism has been playing catch-up in radio and television, that is not the case with the Internet and the blogosphere. Catholic laity are in the forefront of evangelizing and defending the Faith. While there are thousands of Catholic websites that zealously defend the Church, there are but a handful of heterodox or liberal Catholic websites questioning the Church's teachings. Pope John Paul II's call for a springtime evangelization of the Church has been answered. Indeed the tide is turning!"
Catholic bloggers, take a bow.

Be Part of the New Springtime of Evangelization

Pope Benedict XVI once commented on John 5:15, which reads, "No longer do I call you servants... but... friends." The Holy Father said that the Apostles "were able to be apostles and witnesses of Christ because they were close to Him. They were united to him by a bond of love, brought to life by the Holy Spirit."
Lighthouse Catholic Media has experienced tremendous success by distributing over 1,000,000 apologetic CDs to over 1,000 Catholic parishes across the United States and parts of the world. Imagine the impact this is having on our culture! But we must do more; we are called to do more: "Go to the ends of the world", our Lords tells us in Matthew 28.
We are looking for more paid part-time helpers who are friends of the New Evangelization. Mater Angelica Catholic Radio Station: a first for Long Island

Home to 2 million Catholics, Long Island is not known as a Catholic evangelization center, and why not? We have more money, better health, longer lives, more education and more leisure time than any Catholics in world history. What are we missing? The answer is catechesis.
We don't appreciate the treasure we have in our Catholic faith, and we are distracted by the pursuit of happiness, which we erroneously assume is in materialism. A bigger home, a better car, etc. How do we call Long Islanders home to their Catholic faith?
The answer, I believe is in the broadcast empire of a Poor Clare cloistered nun, Mother Mary Angelica. Thus, we are naming the radio station we hope, by the grace of God, and the permission of the FCC to open, Mater Angelica, after the little nun who could. We will feature 24 hours of EWTN programming at 91.7 FM. The signal, though small, would cover a large part of the East End, home to the summer playground of the rich and famous, the Hamptons, reaching a potential audience of 50,000 souls for Christ and His Church. We are members of the Catholic Radio Association and represent a trend of a growing number of Catholic radio stations across the nation,
Here's the rub. The applicant, must be a not-for-profitincorporated organization who wants to provide Catholic programming, with 75% of it's board members living within 25 miles of the area covered by the station signal on the East End.
On reflection while looking over my last message about bringing Catholic radio to the Hamptons, I realize I used some language that is not exactly accurate and that may lead someone to a false impression. I should not have described the suggested applicant as some group who would "hold" the FCC permit for Mater Angelica. Whatever group applies for this permit will have all the rights arising from it and will control all programming decisions at any station that results. Mater Angelica is being organized in the hope -- and to plan for all possible contingencies -- such that if a Catholic applicant wins the permit and desires our assistance in building or operating a station, we will be available to offer it. The fact remains that Mater Angelica is looking for a strong applicant under FCC rules who would be likely to secure the FCC permit with an intention to provide Catholic programming in our area." PLEASE, those of you who are interested in applying, please email me leticia77@optonline.net or leave your contact information below, and offer to help. The window of opportunity will soon close, and may not be open for ten more years.
Please help us to save souls, and make this the Lord's Island!

Where have all the children gone?

Patrick at Driving Out the Snakes has a post with some depressing news about where children rank in importance in American's opinions on marriage.Eighth. What could be more important than raising up the next generation?
My next door neighbor said that instead of having a second child, they would be getting a boat. A big one. Then they got a second dog, which their son calls his brother. So sad. He used to look through my fence to watch my girls playing together in the yard.
Kimberley Hahn, in her wonderful book on incorporating the Church's teaching on life into your home, Life-Giving Love, said, "the best thing you can give a child is a sibling, someone to love them when you are gone".
God bless those brave Catholic parents who have large families, and put up with all kinds of grief from perfect strangers. My friend Alice Gunther writes about the different reactions she sees to her family of seven children here.
I could only have three children (I lost three children to miscarriage) and now my OB said that carrying a child to term at my age would be enough to help Blessed Mother Teresa qualify for sainthood. Come on Mother, I want twins!

Book Review: "Guerilla Apologetics for Life Issues"

I must admit, the title Guerrilla Apologetics for Life Issues, along with the camouflage motif on the cover conjured up some startling images, for me for whom discussions on life issues have sometimes gotten, well, heated. Which sometimes makes me reluctant to enter into discussions, missing what may be unrepeatable opportunities to change hearts for life. Involved in pro-life activism since the seventies, I thought to myself, "more questions and answers, could there possibly be some I haven't read"?

This book, however, as the title suggests, comes at you from a new angle. An accomplished cartoonist for CNSnews.com, (many of his cartoons are included in the book) Paul E. Nowak knows economy of words, and trains the pro-lifer how to maximize impact with fewer all-night discussions, and blow-ups. Less collateral damage on the battlefield of ideas.
The first section deals with tactics. For example, do NOT try to get the other person to change their ideas on the spot, to 'win' the argument. You are reminded throughout the book that you are to keep the conversation going, where both parties ask questions, and no one is backed into a corner, where emotion replaces logic. What matters is friendship, so that, communication is maintained, and the other person is given the space they need to see, often privately, the fallacies in their position. Mr. Nowak says, "The manner in which you conduct yourself and treat others is far more powerful than any argument, however witty and true it is".
Mr. Nowak then gives some basic instruction on logical fallacies, which of course, the pro-choice side uses to defend the indefensible. Their arguments are based on oft-repeated slogans and deliberate misinformation, which after reading this section, you can detect and disarm, while maintaining a calm discussion.
Then, of course, there are the frequently asked questions section. But this book is only 74 pages long, how could it cover the complex life issues? Precisely because, if these questions are asked by the pro-lifer, who knows the answer, they eliminate the need for him to have extensive knowledge of complex issues such as fetal development. All he has to do is ask, "when do YOU think life begins?" and the pro-choicer will have to re-examine his beliefs, which cannot possibly withstand the light of such targeted questions. This is the guerrilla in Guerrilla Apologetics for Life Issues. To be on the attack, but from angles which aren't anticipated, and with disarming chattiness, not to wear you opponent down, answering endless objections. To calmly, respectfully listen to your opponent's questions, and then counter with one of these little zingers which he most likely had never considered, and will keep him thinking long after your encounter. That's when the change of heart will occur, giving you plenty of time to pray for him, as he discovers his inner pro-lifer. Most people are pro-life they just have to have it revealed to them. Mr. Nowak concludes,
"I have met several people who initially tell me they are "pro-choice, " but, as we discuss the issue further, their beliefs turn out to be more in line with the pro-life position than that of Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups".

Get this handy little weapon into your pro-life arsenal, and fire when ready!

Hispanics and the Future of the Catholic Church Part II

Oswald Sobrino was born in the USA. His parents emigrated from Cuba shortly before his birth, settling in New Orleans. He studied there and has moved to Ann Arbor Michigan, where he is obtaining a Master's Degree in Theology in the Seminary. He has been active in the Charismatic Renewal, so prevalent there in Ann Arbor, and authors the blog Catholic Anaysis.

He spoke as a guest lecturer from Nassau Communtiy College Center for Catholic Studies. He is pictured here with Dr. Varacalli, chair of the Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College. His talk was based upon research by the Pew Research Center on Hispanics and Religion. He discussed the face of Hispanic Catholicism in the USA, and how the growing number of Hispanic Catholics in this country offered and opportunity for renewal in the Church, if Anglos (that's anyone with European heritage, like me) would welcome them.

One of the most encouraging books on religious trends which I have read is Dr. Philip Jenkins' The Next Christendom in which he counters popular ideas, such as that in Patrick Buchanan's terrifying The Death of the West, that Muslims are reproducing at a rate which will make them the dominant religious and cultural force in the world. Dr
Jenkins begs to differ, pointing out the vast gains Christianity has made in the Global South, what we used to call the Third World. Those Christians, which of course include Catholics, are more traditionally oriented in terms of religious orthodoxy (morality, belief in traditional doctrine) but their style of worship is charismatic, highlighted by clapping, shouting, hand raising, and calling upon the Holy Spirit in healing prayer and exorcisms.

Mr. Sobrino states that 54% of Hispanic Catholics in America are charismatic, versus 12% of Anglos. Now before my traditional readers write off the charismatic renewal, please read what two prominent men considered traditional by most, had to say about the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, in his introdution to Cardinal Suenens book warned the ecclesial ministry not to let this movement pass them by, but urged them to welcome it fully, with the caveat that those in the renewal should cherish their link to the whole Church, and be guided by their pastors. This would be a warning not to establish a separate identity, or attempt to 'convert' the rest of the Church to a more charismatic worship style, but merely use one's gifts in the service of the layman's role to bring Christ into the marketplace.
Dr Peter Kreeft says in his book Fundamentals of the Faith: Essays in Christian Apologetics: When Paul visits the church in Ephesus (Acts 19), he notices something missing
-- I think he would notice exactly the same thing in most of our churches and
preach the same sermon -- and he asks them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you believed?" (Acts 19:2). Why would he ask that unless he saw a power
shortage? Why did twelve fishermen convert the world, and why are half a billion
Christians unable to repeat the feat? The Spirit makes the difference . . . .
[p. 142]We have received the Spirit by faith and baptism. "Anyone who does not
have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him" (Rom 8:9). But we need the
release, the empowering, the anointing of the Spirit. Such empowerment is probably what the New Testament means by baptism in (or of or with) the Holy Spirit. It is supposed to happen at confirmation. Apparently, it usually does not.
Millions of confirmed Catholics receive it afterward, usually in charismatic prayer meetings or seminars. The charismatic movement is obviously God's answer to Pope John XXIII's prayer for a new Pentecost. Popes Paul VI and John Paul II both blessed it but said that it will fulfill its purpose only when, like the early liturgical movement, it ceases to have a separate identity of its own and is absorbed into the whole Church. In other words, every Catholic should be a charismatic, baptized in the Spirit, empowered like the apostles."
Mr Sobrino asserts that Hispanic Catholics, strangers in a strange land, poor and struggling for survival, often cling to the charismatic renewal seeking the healing power of the Holy Spirit. They have much to offer the routine Catholic who may have been sacramentalized, but not evangelized. Ask a typical American Catholic about their faith, and you are not going to see enthusiastic description of their love for Christ, why not? If our Church has the full deposit of the Faith, and we can receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus every Sunday at Mass, why aren't we excited? Mr. Sobrino wondered if we can go absolutely ballistic about football games, and rock stars, doesn't Our Lord's presence at Mass merit at least some excitement?

Another point made by Mr. Sobrino is that Catholics are turned off by 'Anglo-Light Liturgy', the kind of happy mass, where the emphasis is on the community congratulating one another, rather than the awesome presence of Christ among us. Charismatic praise focuses on "isn't God great" not "aren't we great".The Hispanic faith is very much focused on the suffering Christ, and His Blessed Mother. One can see that looking at Hispanic Liturgical Art, with it's dramatically wounded Crucifixes, and sorrowful mother images. (This Spanish crucifix may be ordered here)These images are often deleted from liturgy lite, or liberal churches, leaving Hispanics (and me) cold. Each Spanish speaking country was a separate approved Marian apparition, most of whom are dedicated as the patronesses of that particular nation. For example, the partoness of Cuba is Our Lady of Caridad de Cobre.
Hispanics, even when they leave the Church, still plead the intercession of Our Lady and the saints, in numbers that would shock their Protestant pastors!
Hispanics, according to the Pew Research, are overwhelmingly dedicated to the Culture of Life. I know that from 20 years of teaching English as a Second Language, when I mention in class that abortion is legal throughout the nine months of pregnancy, my Latino students recoil in horror. A majority of Hispanics, 57% believe that abortion should be illegal, and this percentage declines the longer they are in this country, subject to the influence of our liberal media, schools, social service systems, and unfortunately, churches.
A New York Times article entitled, "Pentecostals in NYC" documents the life of a Dominican Pentecostal pastor in a storefront church, which typifies a growing trend in the metropolitan area. Mr. Sobring challenged us by suggesting that at the rate charismatic Christians of traditional values are growing, that New York City might one day soon be colored RED on the election maps. These voters are up for grabs, will pro-life activists reap this harvest of votes in time?
In conclusion, Mr. Sobrino quoted one of my favorite saints, Jose Maria Escriva, who often stated, "Lord, that I might see". Hispanic Catholics make the Church more orthodox, and more charismatic. They might revive our faith, IF we welcome them into our churches with open arms, as brothers and sisters in Christ.

I was able to visit with Marta Moscoso, Editor of the diocese of Rockville Centre Spanish language newspaper, "Fe Fuerza y Vida". Marta and I met when my daughter Gabriela, then 12, won the Diocesan Respect Life Essay Contest, and she interviewed us for the newspaper. I was able to re-connect with other members of the Catholic Hispanic Community, including Deacon Francisco Calle, the Director of the Spanish Apostolate for the Diocese. We hope to be doing great things together for evangelization in the Latino Community in the future.

Lighthouse Media teaches the faith

I keep a bag of CD's in my car from Lighthouse Catholic Media to listen to, and to give away. How can I afford to give away great teaching CDs?

Read at this amusing testimony from my friend Tracey, who is a Brooklyn girl, by the way!
"I would like to share with you what happened to me today. The Holy Spirit and I out-talked two Jehovah Witnesses!!! They kept trying to get away from me by saying, "We don't want to take up any more of your time." and I kept saying, "Oh I don't mind." (he, he, he!) They asked me if I was Catholic referring to our Blessed Mother statue and I immediately said that I know Jehovah witnesses don't believe that Jesus is God. I proceeded to use the Bible to prove that He in fact is God. One of the Jehovah's witnesses, guy #2, told me he used to be a Catholic and started asking me questions. That's when J.W. guy #1 started looking for the door. They both said they were very surprised that I knew my faith and said they would be back to talk to my husband. I can't wait for them to come back because I have now taken the offense instead of defense.I owe almost everything I know to EWTN's Father Corapi and Dr. Scott Hahn. I also love the CD's I have been receiving from Lighthouse Catholic Media. They are only $3 each and they are talks about the faith, the pope, the dogmas, the BVM, the sacraments, Sacred Scripture, ect. from top speakers around the country. A lot of this information we know already but the speakers bring it to life with their own experiences and humor and articulate what we believe in our hearts but can't always find the right words when we need to.If you are interested in trying any of them out, just call Theresa Piekut at 631-886-1280 or email her at tpiekut@yahoo.com and she will send you a list of titles from the talks on each CD. Or, I will bring some with me at our next gathering and you can try them out before ordering.I joined the CD of the month club. They mail you a new CD every month to your house and charge your credit card. When I'm in the car we listen to the talks and my kids ask questions. I love it because it brings up topics that I can discuss with the children and prepare them to know their faith."
