Brownback - Turncoat
I am not a politician, I am a priest. So I would like to give my priestly perspective about the recent endorsement of Senator Sam Brownback for the candidacy of Kathleen Sebelius for Secretary of Health and Human Services: Senator Brownback's cowardly betrayal of his Catholic faith is even more damaging than his political permission for this renegade to take office.
The situation is atrocious. An extremist abortion hack (called the most pro-abortion governor in the nation by many), who falsely calls herself "Catholic," is given the opportunity to preside over the nation's healthcare system and normalize abortion even further; this radical is then endorsed by a US senator who also calls himself "Catholic" and who, many believe, wants her job back home when she becomes the abortion queen in DC.
With pro-lifers like Senator Sam Brownback, who needs pro-aborts?
Moral theologians can work out what level of cooperation in evil the Senator's endorsement represents - he is, after all, an influential senator whose opposition, if he had given it, may very well have stopped her nomination. Yet, those of us who do not breathe the rarified air of Washington DC and who have dedicated our lives to defending the sanctity of human life understand one thing: any covenant with the abortion industry or its promoters is consent to the killing.
As a convert to the Catholic Faith, Senator Brownback seems not to understand the Church's profoundly wounded heart with regard the slaughter of the innocents. The Church tells us never to participate in that slaughter, no matter what the cost; we do not give aid and comfort to the enemies of human life, we do not stand by while the innocent are being dragged off to a violent murder, and under no circumstances do we endorse the political aspirations of their executioners.
Politicians who sell the lives of babies for political gains are the worst kind of turncoats.Yet, this Catholic Senator's decision constitutes, I think, a watershed moment for all of us who want to see an end to the immoral industry of baby-killing in our country. We will never be served by the compromise of our principles in any form. Catholicism is the solution to this culture of death. If only Catholics ourselves would fully live up to our doctrine and put it into practice, there would be no "Tiller the Killer"s in Kansas, no partial birth abortions, no immoral sex education in the schools or Planned Parenthoods dominating our public life.
Self-described "Catholics" like Brownback (in politics), Doug Kmiec (in academia), Hannity, Matthews and O'Reilly (in media) and others are not the solution to the problem - they are enablers of the problem. Despite their high-sounding lip service to the culture of life, they are compromisers. They will never end abortion because they don't want to end abortion.I have often said that false Catholics, whether they be Cardinals, politicians or janitors, are the ones who have the most to account for on the Day of Judgment when they will have to account for ignoring Christ in His "least brethren," the unborn. Whether through advocacy of the evil (like Sebelius) or negligence in stopping it (like Brownback), they have blood on their hands. They've been given everything the Church has to offer: the teaching, the sacraments, the example of the saints and the grace to stand against Satan and all his works and all his empty promises. In other words, they know better, and the Biblical warning applies to them: "To whom much has been given, much will be required."
Cowards and turncoats beware.
Sincerely,

Fr Tom Euteneuer about the Inauguration and the March for Life
"Obama v Life"
Dear Friends of Life,
As tens of thousands prepare to gather for the 36th annual March for Life in Washington, DC, we are aware that the March occurs just two days after the most extreme advocate of abortion in our nation's history takes office as our President. It is not an understatement to say that we have our work cut out for us.
In keeping with our mission, Human Life International is making a concerted effort to educate the fawning Obama admirers in other countries about the reality of the all-out assault on life, marriage and family that this man and his administration will perpetrate on our world. Please pray for the success of our endeavors to expose the truth and to wake people up to the true challenges that await us in the next four years.
I include in this week's Spirit and Life our newest project to educate those who love life both in America and abroad: namely, the "Pro-Life Talking Points" series. (See side bar.) The first number of the set, called "Obama v. Life," launches just before the Presidential inauguration next week so that we can let all know, in our modest way, that we will counter the anti-life agenda wherever we can.
In any case, please print out the Talking Points for this week (only two sides, front and back) and pass them on to your friends and any of those "Catholics" who voted for Obama. They may need this sheet more than anyone.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr Tom Euteneuer to Pastor Rick Warren about the Inauguration
As much as I enjoy the flack Obama is getting from his base about Pastor Rick Warren's speech at the Inauguration, it does rankle me, when I consider that it's merely political posturing.
As expected, Fr Tom has a great perspective on this issue.

In Obama Inauguration
Pastor’s Participation
FRONT ROYAL, VA — The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, STL, president of Human Life International (HLI), today challenged Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA to reconsider his participation in the upcoming inaugural ceremonies for President-elect Barack Obama.
“We applaud Pastor Warren’s support of pro-life causes as well as his defense of traditional marriage,” said Father Euteneuer. “This is why we are concerned that his high-profile and explicitly Christian prayerful invocation at President-elect Obama’s inauguration may be perceived as an endorsement, even a blessing, of what will likely be the most anti-life administration in the history of this country.”
President-elect Obama has promised to sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), a massive assault on the dignity of life. He is also widely expected to reverse President George W. Bush’s executive order reinstating the Mexico City Policy, which prevents funding of international groups and programs that advocate abortion, as well as funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) which, among other assaults on life, has been demonstrated to support coercive “family planning” measures in China, including forced abortions and sterilizations.
“President-elect Obama has given every indication that he has no respect for the lives of the unborn, and whenever given the opportunity, has promised to enforce the most extreme demands of anti-life groups,” said Father Euteneuer. “This extremist agenda should not be seen to have the endorsement of pro-life leaders such as Pastor Warren.”
“I respect the personal relationship that Pastor Warren has with Mr. Obama,” said Father Euteneuer. “But such a public and explicitly Christian endorsement as this invocation is certainly confusing to those who know Mr. Obama’s record on life issues. We respectfully ask Pastor Warren to reconsider his participation in the inaugural ceremonies, given Mr. Obama’s extremist anti-life views.”

Holy priests terrify me with their predictions about the Obama administration
It began with Fr Corapis' dire warning, "Death Wish; the Impending Suicide of a Once Great Nation". Then, Fr Benedict Groeschel, in an address to a pro-life Conference predicted the decline of America in the same way Rome was conquered; from it's own sinful sloth. Then my own former pastor, Fr McCartney, who should have his own EWTN show, gave a homily last Sunday at his parish on Long Island, which left me hugging Christina, my daughter with Down syndrome and weeping for her future. (I will be linking to this earth-shaking homily next week when it is available online).
Now Fr Angelo Geiger from the Friary of Our Lady of Guadalupe here in Connecticut, quotes Fr Rutler's near comparison of Obama to the Anti-Christ.
This convergence of opinion from the priests I respect most is the most serious warning I have ever heard about the future of this nation.
If this does not inspire prayer and fasting on our part, then we are beyond hope. We who take the time to write and read Catholic blogs must be the messengers of the urgency of what is coming under President Barack Obama. This is what Rep Chris Smith called "A tsunami of the Culture of Death" in Congress, as he discussed Obama on "The World Over". Soon Congress will be reviving the dangerous "Fairness Doctrine" which is nothing less to shut down websites like these which proclaim the truth. There is discussion of a civilian police force which may someday be rounding up pro-life Catholics. I know this sounds incredible but Fr Groeschel told us how it happened to Rome, the most powerful empire of the world. It happened in Germany, and the entire world went to war to stop it. If the USA is under the totalitarian regime of the Culture of Death, who will go to war to save us, the most powerful nation on earth?
Conservative pundits are lulling us to sleep saying that the economy will keep President elect Obama so busy he won't have time to cause trouble on social issues, but this Washington Post article says differently. While the March for Life was outside the White House, President Clinton enacted three executive orders expanding abortion to military hospitals, halting the Mexico City Policy, and approving fetal tissue research. President Bush immediately issued orders in 2000, re-instating the Mexico City policy , and we can expect President Obama to use executive orders immediately to remove the ban on Federal Funding for embryonic stem cell research, and reverse the Mexico City Policy . Our limited monies will immediately be put to evil use in his first days in office. AND I haven't even mentioned the Freedom of Choice Act which will erase 35 years of painsaking progress on the state level to limit abortions.
Do you see the violent gay rights activists targeting Christians, Mormons and Catholics? Expect them to avoid prosecution, and gain special protection, while pro-life protesters are jailed as they were in the Clinton Administration. AND the media will keep up a wall of silence.
Then the darkness will close in. Get the word out before we no longer can!

Oprah and All Her Works and All Her Empty Promises
Here is a guest post by one of my favorite priests: Fr Tom Euteneuer of Human Life International. Like Fr Corapi, he has a gift for pinpointing the lies most of us swallow whole from the Culture of Death. Thanks to his searing honesty and the gift of his priesthood, Fr. Tom enables us to see how captive we are, and how much we need Jesus Christ and His Church. I feel sorry for Oprah because of her terrible childhood, and ask the Lord to have mercy on her as she is imperiling her soul by leading millions of American women into the death trap of New Age pseudo-spirituality. I am also appalled at her duplicity at refusing to host Sarah Palin and the authors of a book called "Gifts: Mothers Reflect on how Children with Down Syndrome Enriched Their Lives". She only appears to be loving and fair which makes her influence more insidious.
Lord, please deliver us from our foolhardy dependence on false idols of our culture.
From Fr. Tom Euteneuer
Of late I am increasingly frightened by something I see happening in our culture: it is the seeming superficial-ization of everything in American life to the point of absurdity and deception. The prime culprit of course is the ubiquitous mass media (especially 24-hour cable programming and the internet) and its constant dumbing down of the American consciousness to the lowest common denominator of the most tantalizing sound bites and images. The other bad boy is the interminable chatter/commentary by clever cultural sharpshooters: it's so bad sometimes that it makes me wonder if we can actually pull ourselves out of our co-dependence upon charlatans. What makes my priest's heart so heavy is that I think our society is going down the path of deep spiritual degradation, and it doesn't look like this trend will be ending any time soon. Certainly not in an election season.
Case in point: Oprah. Our country's richest woman is easily one of the most spiritually bankrupt people in America and also one of the most shockingly popular. How does a New Age con artist like Oprah get so many people to literally adore her? She did not make $260 million last year by feeding people solid food. She deals in fads, feelings and frauds - it's that simple - and apparently she is very effective at convincing people to follow her well-packaged crock of nonsense. Of a recent political speech, she admitted fawningly that she had "cried her eyelashes off" when she heard it, and I am sure her crocodile tears were persuasive to her vast audience. For people schooled in the truth, the reaction would be very different: I saw the same speech and could barely keep myself from throwing up, but they don't pay me $260 million a year.
When asked why she refused to interview her anointed one's political opponent, she balked and got caught in a nasty public relations double-bind which is what usually happens to people who play games with their own popularity. Her refusal would have been easier to swallow if she had just said simply that she didn't like the other candidate and didn't want her on the show; that we can accept! But then again, basic honesty is probably above Oprah's pay grade. The truth is that Oprah has put her social clout to partisan political use, and when she was called on to be fair, she just couldn't admit that she was playing the political hack.
I do think Oprah's menace is fundamentally spiritual though, and that it feeds off the growing spiritual superficiality of the American populace. Its treachery is not to be underestimated. Oprah not only believes in but forcefully advocates pernicious New Age trends like Helen Schucman's A Course In Miracles and Eckhart Tolle's terrible esoteric movement that is trampling down Christian values and opening up a spiritual vacuum in the hearts of millions as we speak. Having the life sucked out of our souls by spiritually bankrupt "celebrities" is a slow spiritual death, to put it mildly. However, Oprah is just the worst case scenario of what is reaching epidemic proportions in a personality-obsessed, spiritually infantile and media-saturated culture. The most popular show in American prime-time is not called "American Idol" for nothing: we are literally becoming a nation of idol-worshippers.
What can we do about all the deceptive cultural garbage clamoring to fill our vulnerable souls? Well, the Church has always had the answer and never ceases to instruct us in the discipline that will bring our souls down that "narrow way" of Christ. We are to "reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises" - that would include all his idols too. We are to consume the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth and say "yes" when we mean "yes" and "no" when we mean "no." As Jesus said, "everything else is from the devil."
