Fr. Robert Drinan is Dead at 86

I remember Fr. Drinan as the nemesis of the pro-life movement of the late 1970's when I was first going to the March for Life. Here we were, freezing on Constitution Avenue, while Fr. Drinan was warm in his Congressional Office, voting to kill babies.
He left office at the directive of Pope John Paul II in the eighties, and I hadn't heard much from him until earlier this month, when he said Nancy Pelosi's mass on her triumphant first day as Speaker of the House. He lent credibility to her facade of Catholicism, and those of us loyal to Church teaching were once again out in the cold, holding signs saying, "you can't be Catholic and pro-choice. Bishop Wuerl made no statement about her receiving communion, and we felt betrayed.
In 1980 Pope John Paul II ordered Drinan to vacate his seat in Congress. In 1996 Drinan spoke out in favor of Bill Clinton's veto of the partial birth abortion ban. He also was an advisor on religious affairs to John Kerry during his 2004 presidential campaign. And in 2007 he was celebrant to a mass honoring Nancy Pelosi.
To quote Fr. Neuhaus, "a Jesuit who, more than any other single figure, has been influential in tutoring Catholic politicians on the acceptability of rejecting the Church’s teaching on the defense of innocent human life." Christopher (comment on The Curt Jester)

Fr. Drinan, you now have to give account for these travesties, at the foot of the throne of the Almighty God, and there are no spin doctors or Democratic buddies to hide behind.
May Our Merciful Saviour have mercy on your eternal soul.
Please pray for priests.
