Let disabled infants starve; Canadian Paediatric Society

In a media release, the Canadian Paediatric Society stated:
ANH [artificial nutrition and hydration] refers to nutrition or hydration that is delivered by artificial means, such as via a feeding tube or intravenously. Legal and ethics experts say there is no difference between withholding or withdrawing ANH versus other therapies that sustain or prolong life. The CPS makes clear that any decision should be based solely on the benefit to the child, while considering the child’s overall plan of care.
“Food and drink evoke deep emotional and psychological responses, and are associated with nurturing,” said Dr. Tsai. “But artificial nutrition and hydration is not about providing food and fluids through normal means of eating and drinking. It should be viewed the same as any other medical intervention, such as ventilatory support.”

Yes, the headline is right, now Canadian parents can give consent to let their disabled but otherwise healthy infant starve and dehydrate to death like Terri Schiavo. Less than a week ago, in this piece for Patheos,  I expressed fear that my daughter with Down syndrome would be refused medical treatment if I were not there to fight for her.
Now it seems that my nightmare coming true, bit by bit. First they dehydrate your child with your consent. Do you think it will be long before they justify doing it without your consent, or behind your back? It happened before, in Christ Hospital in Illinois.
Not surprisingly,  the media is silent on this abomination. 

  What's worse is that the American Association of Pediatricians agrees with this position.Peter Singer's 'bioethics" is actually a nighmarish reality. 

According to Life Site News;

The statement is similar to the statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Both statements approve the withholding or withdrawing of nutrition and hydration (fluids and food) from infants who may not be dying. 

It is most likely happening in a hospital near you.

Down syndrome may cure cancer

Yes, that is what I said. Read this post at Vive Christus Rex about what researchers at Boston Children's Hospital have done.
"Dr. Sandra Ryeom and colleagues at Children's Hospital Boston discovered that at least two proteins found in the extra 21 chromosome of Down syndrome could be instrumental in fighting Cancer."
She states on her website,
"One of the major projects in my lab has been to understand the role of a specific gene, the Down syndrome candidate region-1 gene or DSCR1, in protecting individuals with Down syndrome from cancer. This past year, we have used mouse models to validate our hypothesis that three copies of the DSCR1 gene, as is found in Down syndrome individuals with 3 copies of genes located on chromosome 21, does in fact help suppress the growth of tumors. Using transgenic mouse models and molecular and cell biological techniques, we also now know that DSCR1 blocks the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) that would nourish the cancer cells allowing them to grow into large tumors. Therefore, the extra copy of DSCR1 acts to prevent tumor growth in Down syndrome individuals. We are currently focusing on determining whether the DSCR1 gene product can be used as a therapeutic option to prevent tumor growth in the non-Down syndrome population."
Dr Roger Reeves who is also researching with the mouse model of Down syndrome at Johns Hopkins has known this for some time. He alluded to this at his talk for NDSS at NYU this summer.

As part of the inaugural event of the National Down Syndrome Society's Education Series, Dr. Roger Reeves spoke on the topic of 'New Frontiers of Down Syndrome Research.' Dr. Roger Reeves is Professor in the Department of Physiology and a Core Faculty Member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute for Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He earned his B.S. from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and his Ph.D. at University of Maryland, doing his thesis research at the National Cancer Institute. He went to Hopkins as a post-doctoral fellow in 1983 and began working on gene expression in Down syndrome almost immediately. He is noted for his contributions to the study of gene dosage effects using animal models to understand pathogenesis and human genetic studies to identify genetic modifiers that contribute to more or less severe presentation of Down syndrome. His laboratory is studying a possible therapeutic approach for DS features that occur in the brain. He recently discovered the basis for the reduced frequency of solid tumors in people with trisomy 21 and is using a pharmacologic approach based on this observation to reduce cancer incidence in all people.

Add this to the growing list of reasons why the 90% abortion rate of our beautiful children is an international tragedy. Perhaps God would have given us a cure for cancer much sooner if we had taken them seriously enough to let them live, and do this research to save their lives decades ago. When will the National Institute of Health give these researchers a fair share of it's funding to continue these projects which have the potential to help large populations?
Rep Cathy McMorris Rodgers was with the Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus, pressuring the NIH to give some of it's stimulus package funding to such worthy projects.

Through the efforts of nearly a dozen pro-family groups — including Focus on the Family Action — more than 340,000 Americans have sent comments to the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) in support of health care professionals' right of conscience.
President George W. Bush put regulations in place in December to reinforce federal laws that protect medical professionals from being forced to participate in abortion and other anti-life practices that violate their morals. President Barack Obama wants to overturn them.
Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst at Focus on the Family Action, called it a serious situation.
"If the Bush regulations are reversed and the trend to discriminate continues, people of faith and strong conviction will stop going into medicine," she said. "In 20 years, you may not be able to find a pro-life doctor. Reversing the regulations puts medical professionals and patients at risk." In a recent survey, 95 percent of faith-based physicians said they would rather stop practicing medicine than be forced to violate their consciences.
In another poll — also conducted by WomanTrend on behalf of the Christian Medical Association — nearly 90 percent of Americans said they believe it is important to “make sure health care professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections.”

Protect the Rights of Health Care Workers

For the past few weeks we have been fighting an uphill battle to protect the right of conscience, currently under attack by the Obama Administration, but now we have a chance to make a difference in the U.S. Senate!
Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) has proposed an amendment in the Senate that would protect the right of conscience for health care workers! The Senate is scheduled to vote on this amendment TOMORROW afternoon.
Contact your Senators today and tell them to vote YES on the conscience protection amendment!
This amendment is crucial in our fight to protect doctors and nurses around the country from being discriminated against for refusing to participate in abortions and other medical procedures that violate their conscience.
Sadly we have already seen cases of discrimination. For example in 2008 a nurse was forced to leave two different hospitals because she refused to sign a form pledging to assist in abortions.

Pro-life health professionals organized

'Coalition of Pro-Life Health Professionals' launch a website to counter Recission of HHS Conscience Regulation.
A coalition of pro-life medical organizations just launched this website,Freedom2Care.org , which serves the essential function of letting patients, pharmacists and other professionals to submit their comments demanding that the federal regulations protecting conscience not be revoked....
The Conscience Regulation, which was finalized on December 18, 2009, serves to raise awareness of laws which are already in place to protect the conscience of health care providers but it also adds strength to the laws in place. It brings the weight of enforcement, by giving recourse to those whose conscience was violated where there did not used to be any. Even though the effects of the conscience regulation have not even begun to take their potential effect, the Obama administration is moving with aggressive swiftness to rescind it.

On March 10th, the Federal Register went live with its posting of the rescission of the conscience regulation - including in it a place for people to register their comments.

Nightmare of mercy killing

Dr Davenport, an OB in California paints a horrifying picture in the following scenario of the not-too distant future when socialized health care removes a physician's ability to make ethical decisions.
This is already happening. My 82 year old aunt who is reasonably healthy though on dialysis for 3 years, was admitted to a Catholic hospital this week for complications related to gallstones. The doctor asked her children if they wanted to treat her, or let her die of her symptoms.
They were horrified. She was treated and is doing much better.
We are in the Brave New World of Aldous Huxley.

"You feel vaguely uncomfortable as you are placed in a darkened room in the Comfort Care wing of the hospital. In moments of lucidity, you wonder if you shouldn't have some oxygen, an IV or SOMETHING! But the appropriate therapy, kidney dialysis, is not on the approved list of treatments for patients over 65, having been deemed too expensive. The new regulations from the Department of Health and Human Services were presented just last month to your hospital's Futile Care Committee. It was decided at the highest levels that for those over 65 years of age, renal dialysis would not be a beneficial treatment, that the alternatives of a kidney transplant were too expensive, and that your quality of life on chronic dialysis would be too diminished.

Unlicensed California Abortionist Sentenced To Over 3 Years In Prison

Bertha Bugarin is scheduled for sentencing on 9 more felonies in San Diego County on Feb. 6
Los Angeles, CA - Bertha Bugarin was sentenced in a Los Angeles court on Friday to 3 years, 4 months in prison for committing illegal abortions without a medical license. Prosecutors had asked for five years.
Bertha appeared in court sobbing uncontrollably and begging for leniency and mercy. Her 22-year old daughter, Evangelina Bernal, cried as she read a prepared statement extolling the virtues of her mother.
"In sentencing Bugarin, Judge Sam Ohta has forgotten that Bugarin's victims were given no such mercy. Many of the women were cruelly given abortions without anesthesia or pain medication," said Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullenger.
"Bugarin preyed on vulnerable Hispanic neighborhoods. She hoped to earn the maximum amount of profit by providing the shoddiest care, hoping the illegal status of many in those neighborhoods would prevent them from reporting what one journalist described as her 'shop of horrors.' Her victims will have to live with the trauma and injury Bugarin inflicted on them for the rest of their lives. Bugarin is a cold-hearted predator whose only remorse is that she got caught."
Bugarin has a long history of total disregard for the law and the safety of women who came to her abortion business that once operated 11 abortion mills. At least six of Bugarin's abortionists have lost their medical licenses due to negligence and fraud.
One of her abortionists, Laurence Reich, was a twice-convicted sex offender who molested and raped his abortion patients. Reich surrendered his license in 2006, but continued to work as an abortionist for Bugarin until his arrest in February, 2008.
Even after her arrest in a Los Angeles Police raid on 4 of her remaining 6 clinics, Bugarin continued to operate in San Diego County until her arrest there.
Bugarin pled guilty to 9 felony counts in San Diego County and is scheduled for sentencing there on Friday, February 6, 2009.
"We are very thankful that Bugarin's clinics are now closed and that she is on her way to jail where she belongs. We worked very long to protect the women of Southern California further abuse at the hands of this ruthless predator," said Sullenger.
"This sends a message to abortionists around the nation who have the attitude that they are above the law: We are watching you, and we will not stop working to enforce the laws until you, like Ms. Bugarin, are brought to justice."

This is the reality of 'choice' in this nation. This legal clinic chain was breaking a multitude of laws, as Tiller the Baby Killer in Witchita. It seems that the only difference is that Bugarin had not paid off as many high level politicians as Tiller, who has Gov Kathleen Sebelius (a Catholic) in his pocket,and has slipped out from the net many, many times. You may pay now, or you may pay later, Tiller, but God will not be mocked eternally.

Predsident Bush provides freedom of conscience for health care workers

The Bush administration proposed stronger job protections Thursday for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.
Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt says the new rules are not meant to end services.
Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said health care professionals should not face retaliation from employers or from medical societies because they object to abortion.
"Freedom of conscience is not to be surrendered upon issuance of a medical degree," Leavitt said. "This nation was built on a foundation of free speech. The first principle of free speech is protected conscience."
This is a perfectly reasonable protection of Americans freedom of conscience. Naturally, Planned Parenthood Federation, who is not only America's largest provider of abortions but funded by your tax dollars, is suing.

President Bush protecting freedom of conscience for Medical Profession

The release of the new regulations on Thursday offering more protection for doctors, medical personnel, and medical centers that refuse to participate in abortions received hearty applause from pro-life groups nationwide. They noted how pro-abortion groups have moved from "choice" to forcing abortions.
The U.S. Catholic bishops’ spokesperson on abortion, Deirdre McQuade, welcomed the proposed regulations as a way to protect medical personnel from being coerced to violate their consciences in federally funded programs.
“Doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel face pressure to participate in abortion – a practice that many find abhorrent in good conscience,” McQuade said. “The enforcement of federal laws designed to protect their freedom of conscience is long overdue.”
