State Director Anne Downey launches an informational resource for new parents

Washington, D.C. — Concerned Women for America (CWA) of New York today launched an international project aimed at reducing the 90 percent abortion rate for babies diagnosed with Down syndrome. This new project, developed in consultation with the major Down syndrome groups in America, makes available a free informational brochure titled, “When you’ve learned that your baby may have Down syndrome … There is help and hope!” The brochure offers reassurance to families facing a prenatal diagnosis and provides them with a list of resources and support groups to help them learn more about their baby’s opportunities. At the companion website, DownSyndromeBrochure.com¸ the brochure is available in English and Spanish for free download or for ordering of printed copies at a nominal charge. Eventually, CWA of New York intends to offer the brochure in many different languages and with country-specific versions, such as a French version listing agencies and resources in France.The brochure is timely because of a December 2007 practice bulletin issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) which states, “After the diagnosis of a chromosomal abnormality, the patient should receive detailed information, if known, about the natural history of individuals with the specific chromosomal finding. In many cases, it may be very helpful to refer the patient to a genetic counselor or clinical geneticist and national groups such as The National Down Syndrome Society (www.ndss.org) or National Down Syndrome Congress (www.ndsccenter.org) to help the patient make an informed decision.”

The brochure will allow busy OB/GYN doctors and others to provide expectant mothers with easy-to-read information.The brochure features the photographs of children and young adults with Down syndrome and their family members. Anne F. Downey, Esq., State Director for CWA of New York, says, “The brochure features the faces of a number of children and adults with Down syndrome. Each of the persons featured in the brochure came to me in a special way and has his or her own wonderful story to tell. In the photos you can see the joy that these young people and their family members have. We had no idea how popular this subject would be when the brochure came out.

Dr. Robert Scanlon; great Catholic OB-GYN

A while ago I posted on the dilemma of Catholic obstetricians; they are pressured to prescribe the Pill and perform abortions.If a baby is born with an anomaly, they are sued, so fewer and fewer are chosing this difficult yet noble profession.
My OB, Dr. Robert Scanlon of Huntington, NY is a true Catholic hero. His practice is 100% pro-life, AND he gives his time to helping needy women give birth. If any doctor deserves a thriving practice more than he, I haven't met him yet!

Women Deliver" Fails to Deliver

The United Nations and their member nations have become abortion-obsessed, as you can read in this press release from C-FAM. They ignore glaring causes of death in order to push their agenda for supposed rights of the poor to abortion. It's a thinly veiled case of eugenics; they want to help the poor to exterminate themselves, by providing 'safe' abortions (no abortion is truly safe) while NOT providing life saving medical attention in childbirth, regular check-ups and vaccinations. They ignore glaring cultural issues like sex selection, which threaten women in order to inflict their immoral practices on what are traditional people trying to live by their religious belief, which, in most cases, prohibits abortion.
My obstetrician Dr. Robert Scanlon, volunteers two weeks a year in Nigeria, helping to deliver the babies of the poor. He describes his work here:
" The organization I work with is called Maternal Life International, based in Butte Montana. Our division is called AIM, which stands for aiding infants and mothers. We are located in Huntington, NY , and try to engage students to get involved.
Our foundation is rooted in human dignity, a gift that God our creator has endowed each of us with. From this foundation we build a program that teaches fertility literacy, which recognizes the value of abstinence until marriage, faithfulness in marriage and natural family planning for those who discern the need to space children. On top of this program we teach another program called Safe Passages, which provides training for maternal health care workers as well as aid to hospitals to raise their level of care. Finally, we provide funds to sponsor poor mothers so they can afford prenatal care, go to a birth center for a safe delivery, and then have their child vaccinated.
That's what we do. I will be going over in January to work at Our Lady of the Apostles in Jos Nigeria. It is at this hospital where we sponsor poor women and where we work to train midwives and physicians. While we are there we will put on a conference to train clergy and parish workers as the contraception/abortion agenda is being pushed hard in Nigeria and we hope to give people on alternative that teaches the truths of Church teaching."
Contrast Dr. Scanlon's true concern for the health of women and children to the hypocrisy of "Women Deliver" described below.

(PRESS RELEASE — C-FAM) An international conference to direct policies on maternal and child health gives scant attention to the top causes of maternal and child deaths while focusing 35 out of 98 of its sessions on 'abortion rights'. Pro-family leaders from Europe and North America will attend the Women Deliver conference in London on October 18-20 to spotlight the real needs of women and children and report on the conference’s distortions. They will be available for media during the conference. “Considering the conference’s obsession with abortion, policymakers should not rely on advice from Women Deliver,” noted Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America (CWA). “If the conference truly focused on maternal and child health, it would tackle the leading maternal and child health needs as more than trivial additions.” “The best way to reduce maternal and child deaths is with skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetrics. Yet skilled birth attendants is addressed in only 6 sessions, emergency obstetrics in one,” stated Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D., Executive Vice President of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute. “Post-natal or peri-natal care, fistula, female genital mutilation, newborn health, violence against women, cancer, malaria, and failing health systems get three or fewer sessions each. The handful of panels on HIV/AIDS focuses on rights, not treatment.
No sessions address primary child health issues such as vaccine availability, clean water, sanitation, basic nutritional supplementation such as prenatal and children’s vitamins, or the training of village health workers in spotting or combating protein calorie malnutrition.” Lola Velarde, President of the Institute for Family Policy EU, stated “The medical journal Lancet reported recently on the 100 million missing girls lost to sex selection abortions and female infanticide. Not one session at Women Deliver tackles this leading cause of death of girls. Lancet’s special theme issue for Women Deliver appears to neglect its own revelations on girl-child deaths.” “We cannot reduce maternal and child deaths if policymakers rely on inaccurate information,” said Laura Knaperek, Executive Director of United Families International. “The U.S. experience shows that abortion is not safe, especially chemical abortion, which fails at least 10 percent of the time, requiring surgical abortion. Surgical abortion increases the risk of dangerous early birth in later pregnancies, infections and other complications,” said Donna Harrison, M.D., President-elect of the American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Why there's a shortage of Obstetricians

I can be hard on obstetricians. My first OB, hearing the list of medical interventions I didn't want for my first daughter's birth, as well as my reasons why, nicknamed me, "the professor". After Gabbi's birth, which had required nearly all of the banned procedures, he asked me how he did. "Fine, I replied, exhausted, "at least we didn't get to number 10, the C-section." He smiled. I missed his jovial attitude, and that of his partner, a lovely young woman, who delivered Isabella, when I moved out East, and went to a huge, anonymous practice, where I didn't know who was to deliver Christina until I was in the hospital. This is crazy, I thought, and began searching for a good, Catholic physician who wouldn't participate in procedures banned by the Church, or refer for abortions.
Some might say my standards are impossibly high . Most obstetricians make a living out of contraception prescriptions, as ironic as this may seem. After seeking the advice of mothers of large families, I found Dr. Scanlon, a man whom I can count on NOT to ask me, "so, which form of birth control are you using?" The fact that his office is over an hour away doesn't bother me. He, in our get acquainted interview, passed my highest standard, by asking me for my phone number to give out if one of his patients is expecting a child with Down syndrome. I was going to offer, as I have fruitlessly so many times in the past, to be available to talk to other parents, but Dr. Scanlon, who volunteers one day a week at Life Center, asked me first. Did I mention that he spends two week of his vacation time in Nigeria delivering babies? The man is on the road to sainthood, all right, no wonder Catholic women come from far and near to his practice. That is what we expect from an obstetrician. An honest and moral man with high professional standards. Here is a list of such physicians.

Other parents, it seems, have different expectations. They expect a perfect child. A couple in Florida has just received a $21 million settlement because their physician failed to deliver their perfect child. This amount of money was paid by the doctor's malpractice insurance. My first obstetrician told me in 1993 that his annual malpractice premium was $180,000.Fourteen years ago! Just how much money do you have to earn to make a living on top of that?

Daniel and Amara Estrada have two sons who are both physically handicapped
with the same genetic disorder, Smith-Lemli-Opitz, which does not allow them to
properly synthesize cholesterol. The children have difficulty walking and must
be fed through a feeding tube. They also have smaller heads and other physical
abnormalities.
After the first son was born, the couple's doctor, Boris
Kousseff, from the University of South Florida (USF), told them that they would
be able to have other normal children and did not diagnose the problem as
hereditary. Consequently, when their second son Caleb was born with the same
disorder, the couple sued the doctor and USF.
"He says you have the same chance of anyone else in society of having a normal child. He doesn't tell the truth," said the family's attorney Christian Searcy, Tampa Bay My Fox reports.
The judge ruled that the couple will receive over $21 million dollars in
recompense for the negligence of the doctor.
The couple claimed that if they had had a proper diagnosis after the birth of their first child in 2002, they could have determined by a pregnancy test that the second son Caleb had the same disorder. According to the lawsuit, if the couple had known this, they would have aborted him, the Associated Press reports

Naturally, my heart goes out to the Estradas, and their sons. I know what it is to have a disabled child. I haven't decided not to have another, my age seems to have decided that, but if I could become pregnant again, whether the child would have Down syndrome, would certainly be on my mind. But would I blame the obstetrician for not giving me proper warning to terminate his life? Never. It's not his call. God sends the babies, and we receive them. Period. I know this is not very 21st century of me, but it is very Catholic. I wonder if the Estradas have a church, and what advice, if any. they received from their pastor. I also wonder how they plan to explain where they got Caleb's treatment fund. I pray that he never reads this article.

Once a friend of mine wanted to sue Planned Parenthood for a botched tubal ligation; after the procedure (which I begged her not to have) she had gotten pregnant. For a while, the enticing thought of recouping millions from that villainous organization clouded my thoughts, and I searched for a top-notch malpractice lawyer. Then reality began to dawn, and I realized that someday little Maria might find out why her parents have a nice trust fund for her. Because she wasn't supposed to have been conceived. And I couldn't do that to her.

So, now medical students are afraid to enter the field of obstetrics, because of settlements like this one. They are supposed to assure the parents that they will deliver them a healthy baby, or at least offer fair warning so that the child can be aborted. This is why my obstetrician didn't tell me personally that Christina had Down syndrome, and seemed terrified of me the day after the birth, when I did know. I thanked him that she was 9.9 on the Apgar scale, which was his job, and told him her diagnoses was God' doing, and if I had a complaint, I would take it up with Him. He was vastly relieved.

When technology offers false hope that all anomalies can be detected before birth, when babies are products promised on brochures, a creeping mentality of the baby as product leads to the Estrada case. And fewer young doctors willing to take the risk of bringing new life into the world.

Sam Brownback and Rev. Henry Shaver stand up for life in Wichita

The Wichita Eagle quotes from Sam Brownback's new book, "From Power to Purpose".

"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently put out new guidelines recommending that all pregnant women be offered screening to determine whether their child may have Down syndrome. The college argues that it is more responsible to inform parents of their options beforehand so that they can decide whether or not to let the baby live.
This recommendation codifies a practice that has become all too common: direct or indirect pressure applied to parents by the medical establishment to end the lives of unborn children with disabilities, because these children are supposedly too much of a burden for their parents to bear.
About 80 percent of Down syndrome children are aborted today. But if these children are born, the Americans With Disabilities Act protects them and assures them of a certain level of accommodation by society. It's one of the most highly touted pieces of legislation of the past 30 years. If you've got a disability, we want to help you.
The irony is that some people are working to make sure that babies with disabilities are never born. That's such a shame.
Many Down syndrome children are the centerpieces of their families. They have amazing gifts and are full of affection. But apparently society thinks nothing about their death in the womb. I raised this question with my colleagues. I've also raised it during hearings on Supreme Court justices. But there's still no support in favor of the life of a disabled child."
Jean at Catholic Fire quoted the above, and wants us to add some pro-life comments on the left leaning Wichita Eagle article.

Wichita is the home of notorious late term abortionist, George the baby killer Tiller, and at this moment there are hundreds of Christians praying outside his mill, that he be converted or brought to justice. Operation Rescue has been covering the story of attempts to charge him with doing late term abortions against the law, upon underage women, both felonies, but the Attorney General, Morrisey who received campaign money from Tiller has continually obfiscated, so that Tiller is only charged with misdemeanors. Sunday, a brave pastor,"Bud" Shaver, got up and read Isiah 1 at Tiller's Lutheran Church. He was arrested for disrupting the service. A Lutheran minister rrested for reading a Bible verse in a Lutheran church (albeit uninvited) and calling a public sinner to conversion. Unbelievable.

How can such things be happening in this once God-fearing nation?!
