Fallen Heroes of the Pro-life Movement

We have lost many of the original pro-life heroes in the past couple of years. The movement, thanks to their perseverance is now stronger than ever, but I thought I'd let you read Rev Gerald E. Murray's homily for the fonder of legalized abortion who became an ardent pro-lifer and was baptized a Catholic by John Cardinal O'Connor. I strongly recommend his book, "The Hand of God". It galvanized my commitment to the pro-life movement. Since then, the tide has turned and there are millions upon millions of young people who are committed to the cause of preserving human life from its conception to natural death. Like all great movements for human rights, they should realize upon whose broad shoulders they are standing.
Great men like Dr Nathanson were pro-life when it might cost you everything, reputation, occupation. and he even feared for his life at the first time he gave public witness to his conversion from helping Betty Friedan make up the lie of 5,000 back-alley abortions in order to get it legalized, to the blinding moment of truth which seared his soul with the truth that he had participated in 85, 000 murders of unborn children. Many of you know Dr Nathanson from the sober-faced doctor from the film "The Silent Scream". He suffered from the weigh of his grave sins all his life. He wanted to suffer, he knew he deserved it. May his Purgatory be light and may the souls of the babies he fought to save pray for him soon to meet Jesus whom he loved so dearly.
May his intercession bring the other abortionists and cooperators in this central evil of our times, into the light of truth. .

Homily at the Funeral of Bernard N. Nathanson, M.D.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral
February 28, 2011
The Rev. Gerald E. Murray, J.C.D.

Your Excellency, Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, how pleasing it is to us all that you are offering this requiem Mass for the soul of Dr. Bernard Nathanson in the Cathedral where he was baptized, confirmed and received his First Holy Communion in December of 1996. Your telephone call from Rome to Dr. Nathanson just weeks before his death was a source of strength and encouragement to him in his final suffering.

Reverend Fathers, especially Fr. C. John McCloskey, who prepared Dr. Nathanson for baptism and was his spiritual mentor; Dear Religious Sisters, in particular the Sisters of Life, who loved Dr. Nathanson so much; both you and Dr. Nathanson are the children in Christ of that stalwart defender of life who is your common spiritual father, John Cardinal O’Connor.

Dear Christine, Dr. Nathanson’s devoted wife; Dear Joseph his son, and all the members of Dr. Nathanson’s family, and all those who assisted him in his illness.

We are joined today at this funeral Mass by a great cloud of witnesses to commend to God’s mercy this faithful and courageous servant of the Lord, Dr. Bernard Nathanson. Our congregation this morning is made up of so many who knew and admired the man we entrust today to our loving God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Here also present are those who knew him from afar by virtue of his untiring efforts to promote respect for life through his writings, his speeches and especially through his two powerful films, The Silent Scream and The Eclipse of Reason.

Here present in spirit are also those two priests, great friends of Dr. Nathanson, to whom he dedicated his book, The Hand of God: Fr. Paul Marx, O.S.B. and Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, true heroes of the movement to end legalized abortion in our country and throughout the world.

The prophet Isaiah proclaims this hope filled message in our first reading today: “Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee” (Is 35:10)

The everlasting joy of Heaven is our hope. We long for the joy and gladness promised to those whom the Lord has ransomed. Dr. Nathanson for years longed for that joy and gladness. He found it in Christ.
In his book, Dr. Nathanson wrote of his medical school professor and fellow Jewish convert to Catholicism, Karl Stern: “…he possessed a secret I had been searching for all my life – the secret of the peace of Christ” (p. 46) After years of deep involvement in what he called “the satanic world of abortion” (p. 58), Dr. Nathanson came to believe in Christ. He lived with Christ crucified and resurrected for the last 14 years of his life on earth. He experienced great peace upon becoming a Christian.

St. Paul exhorts us today in our second reading: “[L]et the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body.” (Col 3:15) Dr. Nathanson heard and answered that call. He knew great peace in the Catholic Church after years of much trouble and despair. We pray today that he enter into the fullness of that peace in the land of the living.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Dr. Bernard Nathanson is a towering figure in the history of the United States because he was an unflinching witness on behalf of those millions who have been killed, or are threatened to be killed, by abortion. He was a witness who spoke out against what he himself had helped to bring about, namely the legalization of abortion in our country, along with his fellow founders of NARAL, the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws.

He broke with this evil movement, and repented of his sins. His epiphany came when he saw ultrasound images of the developing human being in the womb. He wrote: “Ultrasound opened up a new world. For the first time we could really see the human fetus, measure it, observe it, watch it, and indeed bond with it and love it. I began to do that.” (p. 125) He continued “Having looked at the ultrasound, I could no longer go on as before” (p. 128)

Dr. Nathanson followed the truth where it led him. He wrote: “After my exposure to ultrasound, I began to rethink the prenatal phase of life. … When I began to study fetology, it dawned on me, finally, that the prenatal nine months are just another band in the spectrum of life. … To disrupt or abort a life at this point is intolerable – it is a crime. I don’t make any bones about using that word: Abortion is a crime.” (p. 130)

Msgr. William Smith is another great hero of the pro-life movement whose passing we still mourn. He never tired of repeating this axiom: “Social engineering is always preceded by verbal engineering.” Dr. Nathanson and Msgr. Smith were champions in the never-ending struggle here below to prevent the ideological corruption of language. That is a Godly struggle. May we take up where they have left off.

Dr. Nathanson reminds me of another great witness against evil and in favor of the truth in the twentieth century, Whittaker Chambers. I read somewhere that Betty Friedan thought the same thing, but I am sure for different reasons.

Chambers renounced his membership in the Communist party and spoke out against those who were part of a conspiracy to harm our nation through espionage for the Soviet Union. He confessed to being a Soviet spy. He was vilified.  He suffered. He stood firm. He spoke the truth.

The introduction to his book Witness is a “Foreword in the Form of a Letter to My Children.” This quotation from the foreword captures Dr. Nathanson’s courageous witness on behalf of innocent human beings menaced by abortion: “A man is not primarily a witness against something. That is only incidental to the fact that he is a witness for something. A witness, in the sense that I am using the word, is a man whose life and faith are so completely one that when the challenge comes to step out and testify for his faith, he does so, disregarding all risks, accepting all consequences.” (p. 5)

Dr. Bernard Nathanson was a fearless advocate of the self-evident truth that it is a grave injustice to kill people before they are born. The unjust decisions of the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton mandating legalized abortion in our country cry out for the counter-witness of those who will not abide this injustice. Heroism is called for. True heroism is never easy and is only possible through God’s grace. We acknowledge today our gratitude to a true hero who would not abide such grave injustice in our land. In doing so, we too recognize the Hand of God in the life of Dr. Nathanson.

Chambers wrote of himself in that foreword to his book: “But a man may also be an involuntary witness. I do not know any way to explain why God’s grace touches a man who seems unworthy of it. But neither do I know any other way to explain how a man like myself – tarnished by life, unprepossessing, not brave – could prevail so far against the powers of the world arrayed almost solidly against him, to destroy him and defeat his truth. In this sense, I am an involuntary witness to God’s grace and to the fortifying power of faith.” (p. 6)

Only God knows whether Dr. Nathanson was a voluntary or involuntary witness against abortion and for life. But it is clear that he was truly courageous. He rejected what he knew to be evil, and then spoke out. In his humility he, like Chambers, recognized that God’s grace is made ever more manifest when He chooses unexpected apostles.

Chambers tells a haunting story in his book which gives us, I think, an insight into Dr. Nathanson’s rejection of abortion. He writes: “The daughter of a former German diplomat in Moscow was trying to explain to me why her father, who, as an enlightened modern man had been extremely pro-Communist, had become an implacable anti-Communist. But she loved her father and the irrationality of his defection embarrassed her. ‘He was immensely pro-Soviet,’ she said, ‘and then –you will laugh at me – but you must not laugh at my father – and then- one night – in Moscow he heard screams. That’s all. Simply one night he heard screams.’
“A child of Reason and the 20th century, she knew that there is a logic of the mind. She did not know that the soul has a logic that may be more compelling than the mind’s. She did not know at all that she had swept away the logic of the mind, the logic of history, the logic of politics, the myth of the 20th century, with five annihilating words: one night he heard screams.”(pp. 13-14)

The scream Dr. Nathanson heard was a silent scream. A silent scream uttered by an unseen victim; that is, until the ultrasound machine brought the truth of abortion into plain view for this medical doctor who had expended great effort to make this horror legal and widespread in America. That doctor thereafter boldly decided to make the reality of human life in the womb visible for the whole world to see. Dr. Nathanson wrote in his book: “By 1984, however, I had begun to ask myself more questions about abortion: What actually goes on in an abortion? … so in 1984 I said to a friend of mine, who was doing fifteen or maybe twenty abortions a day, ‘Look, do me a favor, Jay. Next Saturday, when you are doing all these    abortions, put an ultrasound device on the mother and tape it for me.’ He did, and when he looked at the tapes with me in an editing studio, he was so affected that he never did another abortion. I, though I had not done an abortion in five years, was shaken to the very roots of my soul by what I saw.” (pp. 140-141)

Anyone who has seen The Silent Scream is shaken. Seeing the truth about abortion overthrows the lies and deceptions of the abortion lobby. An important way that we can honor the memory of Dr. Bernard Nathanson is to continue his work of making the truth known to anyone who is willing to listen to our message, and then to discover what pregnancy really is by looking at ultrasound images of a pre-born human being.

The psalmist tells us: “Cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you.” (Ps 55:22) For the past two years it was my privilege to bring the consolation of the sacraments to Dr. Nathanson at his home. His devout reception of the Holy Eucharist revealed to me a man truly in love with Jesus Christ. The Lord indeed was sustaining his son who had cast his heavy burden of past evils on the Lord. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:15-16) says the Lord in today’s Gospel. The rest, the peace of soul that Christ gives begins in this life and passes through the Cross and then into eternity. All the while God guides and strengthens us, if only we let him.

Whittaker Chambers ended his Letter to My Children in this way: “My children, when you were little, we used sometimes to go for walks in our pine woods. In the open fields, you would run along by yourselves. But you used instinctively to give me your hands as we entered those woods, where it was darker, lonelier, and in the stillness our voices sounded loud and frightening. In this book I am again giving you my hands. I am leading you, not through cool pine woods, but up and up a narrow defile between bare and steep rocks from which in shadow things uncoil and slither away. It will be dark. But, in the end, if I have led you aright, you will make out three crosses, from two of which hang thieves. I will have brought you to Golgotha – the place of skulls. This is the meaning of the journey. Before you understand, I may not be there, my hands may have slipped away from yours. It will not matter. For when you understand what you see, you will no longer be children. You will know that life is pain, that each of us hangs upon the cross of himself. And when you know that this is true of every man, woman and child on earth, you will be wise. Your Father.”

Our life indeed is meant to be lived in intimate union with the crucified Lord. Golgotha, Calvary is indeed the place where we learn to be wise. The pain we experience, if united to Christ’s pain, is then understood to be a blessing that opens our hearts to the only Love that can take away that pain. That Love is Christ, and the gift of eternal life wipes away all pain and suffering. To live and to die in hopeful expectation of that redemption is God’s great gift to us fallen creatures here below. That gift was joyfully received by Dr. Nathanson in this very Cathedral 14 years ago.

Today we pray that the fullness of joy, which is the blessed vision of God seen face to face, be given to his son and our brother, Bernard Nathanson.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat ei. Amen.

Please vote for the Church Ladies

We are mothers who have home schooled our children, and managed to write about it. We have come together under the able editing of Patti McGuire Armstrong of the Amazing Grace series,  and Theresa Thomas to write an anthology of stories called Stories for the Homeschool Heart to encourage other mothers who are homeschooling their children, and we get mocked by the author of another book in the competition at About.com as "The Church Ladies". Such behavior is hardly worthy of a Catholic.Besides, what is wrong with being a Church lady? I've been called worse!

I am proud to be a Church Lady. Proud that my busy friends and I found time to write and share the joys of home schooling and what it has done for my family and the Church in general.  I think our book is inspiriting, funny, encouraging, and faithful to the mission of the family as the Domestic Church.
IF you agree. please vote as many times as you want before March 8 when the competition ends.

Our 19th anniversary dinner in Tuscany

Alright, we weren't exactly in Tuscany, just at a restaurant by that name.
We went for the first time to Mohegan Sun to a uniquely situated,  though loud restaurant in the shopping mall section called "Tuscany". The noise was provided by the casino's constant music, the Saturday night rowdy crowd, and the rushing waterfall behind us. It was hard to speak to each other without shouting.
Hardly an intimate dinner, but the wine was good,  Francisco's swordfish was outstanding and my goat cheese Tortellini with smoked squash, honey walnut sauce was heavenly. Its a nouvelle cuisine, big plates, tiny portions place, good for the figure, but don't go there hungry.Mohegan Sun has many dining options, you can go to the all you can eat buffets, we chose atmosphere and fancy cuisine considering the occasion.
We did a bit a sightseeing in the fancy shops, won $10 in the slot machines and called it a night. Such passes for thrills among us old married folk. Then we came home bearing ice cream to celebrate our marriage with the teenagers who were babysitting Christina.
It was a lovely time. Thank you God for my marriage, my home, and the blessing of family.

Terrorists treated better than Irish priests

NO ONE not even murderous terrorists are treated with such disdain as dead  Irish priests who may have hurt children 50 years ago. So much for innocent until proven guilty.
 IF ONLY PRIESTS WERE TERRORISTS
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on two editorials in today's New York Times:

In the New York Times editorial, "A Right Without a Remedy," a strong plea is made for the U.S. government to respect the constitutional rights of detainees at Guantánamo Bay. There is another editorial, "Acts of Contrition," that takes the Catholic Church in Ireland to task for cases of priestly sexual abuse. The former editorial says absolutely nothing about why suspected Muslim terrorists who want to blow up the U.S. are being held in custody, and the latter editorial says absolutely nothing about the rights of accused priests. If only priests were terrorists.

The Times says the Church in Ireland "has a long way to go to cleaning house," insisting that "reforms are lagging" and "some predator priests are still in ministry." It is thrice wrong.

In 2005, the Irish Bishops' Conference issued a comprehensive report on reforms underway, "Our Children, Our Church: Child Protection Policies and Procedures for the Catholic Church in Ireland." In 2008, another report was released, "Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland." In 2010, the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland published its 2009 Annual Report.

The latter document shows that 42 percent of the new allegations made in 2009 were about deceased priests. "None of the allegations reported to the National Office originated from children or young people. Some went back to events that took place in the 1950s and 1960s." Not a single priest who has had an accusation made against him is in full ministry, and those who are in limited ministry are there despite the fact that "the allegation that caused the removal from full ministry has not been confirmed through any civil or canonical court process." In other words, the Times got it wrong again. It should correct the record.

Black genocide poster in Soho drawing fire

ABORTION = BLACK GENOCIDE
A pro-life group, Life Always, has displayed a huge billboard in the SoHo section of New York City that shows a picture of a young black girl with the inscription, "The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb." It has created a firestorm in New York City.

The organization responsible for the billboard has the strong backing of prominent African Americans; they chose to display their message during Black History Month. Rev. Stephen Broden, an African American who heads Life Always, says he wants to protest abortion as black genocide.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented on the critics of the billboard today:

Life Always says it wants to raise public awareness of Planned Parenthood's war on black people. Good for them.Margaret Sanger, who founded the organization, made no secret of her racist agenda to wipe out the "weeds" in the African American community. To this day, a disproportionate number of Planned Parenthood's abortion clinics are located in minority neighborhoods, their largest cheerleaders being affluent white liberals who perversely boast of championing the cause of the black poor.

Nationally, blacks, who make up 13 percent of the population, account for over one-third of all the abortions. In New York City, where over four out of ten children are killed before birth, the rate of abortion among black women is 60 percent. But killing six in ten black babies isn't enough to satisfy some affluent white liberals—they want more.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn does not find black genocide offensive—she finds the billboard offensive. Worse is Bill de Blasio, who in the name of being New York's Public Advocate, is advocating that the billboard be taken down. He says, "The billboard simply doesn't belong in our city. The ad violates the values of New Yorkers." The values he is so proud of include the devaluing of innocent human life, making New York City the abortion capital of the nation.

American Life League Celebrates Pence Amendment Victory

Reacting to the passage of the of the Pence Amendment to the Continuing Resolution bill by a vote of 240 – 185, Judie Brown, president of American Life League issued the following statement:
American Life League has worked for years to end all taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. The passage, today, of the Pence Amendment, which will take every penny of federal government money away from Planned Parenthood until at least September 30, 2011, is a great victory for the American people and their children.
We congratulate Representative Mike Pence for having the courage to introduce this amendment, the 240 members of the House from both parties who voted for it, and our supporters who have worked very hard over the years to make this day happen.
We understand that this is just Round 1 in the effort to defund Planned Parenthood. There will be many days and much effort ahead to get this amendment through the Senate and signed into law. We are ready to engage that battle, but today we celebrate winning Round 1.
We are sure that God smiled today.

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death. To stand out for Christ: The Fellowship of the Unashamed

Recently I have basked in a wonderful response to my interview by Teresa Tomeo on EWTN during the March for Life about my advocacy group Keep Infants with Down Syndrome. So, I was relatively unguarded when Kirk Carapezza from WBUR a radion station at Boston University asked to interview my on the comments I made below.

"I am raising an 8 year old daughter with Down syndrome, I refused pre-natal testing since abortion was not an option for my family. The key to lowering the 92% abortion rate of children with Down syndrome is education. Did you know that recent studies at Johns Hopkins and Stanford University with mouse models of Trisomy 21 are holding hope that a drug can be developed within a decade to normalize the cognition and memory of those with the disorder? And that Dr Roger Reeves of Johns Hopkins holds out hope that this research may provide treatment for the neural degeneration of Alzheimer’s Disease, and even possible cure for cancerous tumors?

The future looks bright ONLY if we give these babies life and invest in such promising research. Look at the results of the education advances of the last 20 years when we stopped institutionalizing children with Ds and began to mainstream them. Adults who have been in typical educational environments are graduating college, holding down jobs, getting married, excelling in sports, driving and starring in films.
Would anyone have considered these possibilities in the 1970′s?
If you, like Marjorie, feel unequal to the challenge of raising your child with Ds, over 600 families are on a waiting list to adopt your baby with Down syndrome.
Where there is life there is hope."
Posted by Leticia Velasquez on February 2, 2011

I did what felt like a thorough interview with Kirk Carapezza, an alumni of Holy Cross College as part of the letters section in response to the original interview with Down syndrome advocate, Dr Brian Skotko. . My piece appeared after a banal 15 minute discussion on nit-picking (an in depth discussion about head lice). Its at 15:25 in the interview. You can listen to it here.

My points  from the original comment were covered and Kirk even took the time to ask me to verify the 92% abortion rate of babies with Trisomy 21 and the number of families on a waiting list to adopt a child with Down syndrome (600, I interviewed the nurse who maintains the registry).
Yet, from a ten minute interview, only a tiny soundbite was played and Kirk emphasized that I declined pre-natal testing due to my convictions. While that IS true, my sharply curtailed comments were followed by a woman who related that her friend spent untold sums of money on therapies for her child with Trisomy 21, and that this would not be possible for the average person. The implication was that if you are not wealthy and prepared to expend lots of energy on your child with Trisomy 21, you had better abort him. This is utter nonsense, we paid nothing out of pocket for all of Christina's therapies and education. I can't help feeling like they deliberately frightened any woman who may be carrying a child with Trisomy 21 into an abortion.

Never will I submit to a taped interview again on a liberal radio station with such a pro-abortion agenda!!
My previous experience with NPR was positive, I posted about how Christina has enriched both my family life and my Catholic faith here. .But it was written and published in its entirety.
I posted my anguish in a note on Facebook with a large sympathetic response. Thank you to my loyal friends who were as outraged as I was. Why should be we surprised? The world has always hated us for being faithful to the Gospel of Life.
I also received a long private email from an author who tries to influence others without showing her hand as a Catholic as directly as I do. God bless her, she may reach more souls for Christ than I do, with her eloquence, and conviction, but even she had a bad experience with NPR as her interview on her book was scrapped because she insisted on giving God credit for her accomplishments when the host was desperately trying to coach her to attribute her accomplishments to socialization, or any other means other than the grace of God.  She ignored it and paid the consequences.
I offer this meditation from Patrick Madrid's website as an inspiration for those of us who are  trying to influence the Culture of Death and running straight into walls with the secular media. Its just part of the life we live as followers of the Crucified One. What did we expect this side of heaven? It should neither discourage us or slow us down.
We are. . .
— THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE UNASHAMED —

I AM A PART of the Fellowship of the Unashamed.

The die has been cast. The decision has been made. I have stepped over the line. I won’t look
back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.

My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is in God's hands. I am
finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, the bare minimum, smooth
knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, frivolous living, selfish giving, and
dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, applause, or popularity. I
don’t have to be right, first, the best, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live
by faith. I lean on Christ’s presence. I love with patience, live by prayer, and labor with the
power of God’s grace.

My face is set. My gait is fast, my goal is heaven. My road is narrow, my way is rough, my
companions are few, my Guide is reliable, and my mission is clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed. I
will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the
table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, shut up, let up or slow up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid
up, and spoken up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give until I drop, speak out until all know,
and work until He stops me.

And when He returns for His own, He will have no difficulty recognizing me. My banner is
clear: I am a part of the Fellowship of the Unashamed.
